Q:

furnance mod#86776491

A:

The weather outside is truly frightful for many parts of the country and you need a good functioning furnace to ward off the cold. I can see that with the furnace just cycling from on to off, it would not be comfortable. While you wait for the expert, I found a couple of links that may help. The second link is a previous expert post for this problem. It gives several general problems that may be the cause. The first link is an article for troubleshooting a gas furnace. If you do decide you would feel more comfortable having an experienced technician diagnose and make repairs, an option is to visit Sears Home Services and use the scheduler. That is the third link. Hope this helps!

I am sorry you are having a problem with your furnace.

If I have understood you correctly, the flames are not staying on the whole time. They come on and go off during the heating cycle. If this is the case, I would suspect the air flow of the furnace is obstructed usually caused by a dirty air filter. If you have replaced the air filter and still have the problem, I recommend checking all of the air ducts. They all should be open and free of obstruction. If that does not cure your problem, I suspect a dirty blower wheel in the furnace. I do not recommend trying to clean the blower wheel yourself. The motor and blower assembly has to be removed from the furnace and disassembled to properly clean the blower. I hope this is helpful. ck either the coil (mounted on the front of the 'squirrel cage' blower), then (like mine) replace the thermal-coupling. also, rarely, ck the thermostat. I had a LOT of problems with my gas furnace and replaced the thermal-coupling two times the second time (under professional supervision) to get the flame to metal in the right position. i found it easier to just call on a professional (even tho the cost was more than I wanted to pay).

Thank you for your reply. I am a bit confused on what you mean when you say it comes on and goes off. The furnace has two parts the first is the flame and the second is the air circulation. If the flame come on and stays on and the fan turns on and off the problem could be too much air flow. The fan control has to be warm enough to stay on. If the fan comes on and cools the fan control enough the fan will turn off until it warms up to turn the fan back on. The flame will stay on the whole heating cycle if this is the problem. If the flame is coming on and going off the problem could be over heating of the furnace. If the temperature in the furnace is too hot it will turn the flames off until the fan cools it down then the flame comes back on. If this is the case, I would suspect a plugged air conditioning coil because you have stated the blower wheel is clean and the filter was changed. Please reply below with more details if you need further assistance.

the furnance only has one cold air return, facing the entry hallway. It is about 8" tall and 30" in length. I will try covering part of it. Thanks. (the flame stays on the entire time)
