Question and Answers

Q:

Why won't my heat exchanger for my furnace heat pass 150-160 degrees?

A:

Thank you for your question. This type of problem can be caused by the limit switch opening too soon or the fan switch may not be bringing the fan on soon enough. The fan switch has a range of 90 to 130 degrees. If the fan does not run at all, it could also be a defective fan motor causing this problem. Furnaces can be very dangerous when not working properly and I would recommend having a technician check and make this repair. I'm listing a site you can access, to schedule a tech to come out. Thank you for your question. I know it can be frustrating when the furnace stops working. This furnace shows to have a standing pilot. To light this pilot, turn the knob on the gas valve to pilot only. Now press in on the knob and use a match or lighter to light the pilot. When the pilot ignites, keep pressing the knob on the gas valve for a couple of minutes to allow time for the thermocouple to heat up. Now, release the knob slowly and the pilot should remain lit. If it does stay on, now turn the knob to the on position. If the pilot goes out, it will indicate a problem with the thermocouple or gas valve. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Thank you for sending the model of your heater and the part numbers of the switches.

We don't have any instructions for installing part number 505962 in place of 502171. If you can send some images of the 2 thermostats so we can see the terminals, we can give you the wiring instructions.

You can attach the images and your comments to the bottom of this thread. Thank you.

Hi Jimmy, I'm not computer savy and i will try to get pictures of the thermostats to you, but I'm wondering if it is possible that this one limit switch has now taken the place of the high temp and low temp separate controls. Thanks

I am not very computer savvy myself. I hope you can send some images. I looked up the part numbers of the high and low temperature fan switches and they don't convert to the same number. The information posted in our parts look-up system states the part number 505962 switch should be installed by a technician. I recommend you go to http://services.sears.com/shs/category/repair and get a Sears technician to install the new switch. 64 867 505962 LIMIT SWITCH 1 34.43 34.43 867736416 RPDC - Substituted for 42 867 502171 - NOT TO BE SOLD TO CONSUMERS. TECH INSTALLED ONLY PART. - FACT BIN = RPDC, QTY = 1

Hi Jimmy, my gut feeling is that they have the wrong number for the substitute part. It was very hard from Parts to get any info on the hight temp control switch. Is there any way you can get me that number or tell me what the high temp range is on the old control switch. There's a HVAC store near me and told me he had alot of high temp switches but needed to know the range on the switch on my particular model . It was never written on the old switch plus would you believe , I lost it! Thanks.
