The controller getting hot could be caused from a variety of mechanical issues or it could just be that the controller is bad. To add to the fun, the controller could now be bad due to a mechanical problem that has been slowly going on for some time.

Incline the machine all the way up. Then stand as far forward as you can and give yourself a slight push. You should slide about 3/4 of the way back. Move back to the front and place each foot to the edge of the walking belt and give yourself a slight push again. You should slide to about the same 3/4 of the way back. If you don’t slide back far enough the problem could be the walking belt in need of lubrication, the walking deck could be worn out, the belt could be too tight or loose, or there could be a roller with bad bearings.

If you do slide back far enough (or very close) the problem can be with the motor, the controller, or the power board. I don’t suspect the power board as you didn’t mention any other problems. To test the motor and/or controller you will really need to have a qualified technician come take a look at the machine.
