Thank you for your question on the crank axle for the Proform Cardio cross trainer.

You may be correct that the axle has broken by I would be more concerned about the axle shaft bearings on the shaft.

The crank arms are held onto the axle with a center bolt and then the arm fits on the tapered axle. You may have to work the arm back and forth to remove the arm from the axle.

If the shaft is loose and wobbles around in the frame then I would suggest that you also change the bearings #40 with the shaft #39.

Once you get the snap ring out of the housing you will be able to tell how many parts you will need to repair this Cardio.

You will need to drive out and tap in the bearings into the housing on either side. Then work the shaft through the bearings and if you need to tap on the shaft please protect the tapered end of the shaft with a piece of wood so as to no distort the shaft.

Please let me know how it went with the repair after you get the snap ring pliers.

Sam A.

Thank you for getting back with me. I did get the snap ring pliers. The axle was broken. Once I got the snap rings off I had a bit of a time getting the crank arms off the axle. But with a hammer and a vise I manage to finally get the crank arms off the axle. The bearings seam to be ok, so I won't need to replace them. I have ordered a new axle and now just waiting for it to come so I can put it back together and get back to exercising again, Yeah. Is there anything special that I should do when I put it back together? Thanks, Kris

Thank you for the update on the cross-trainer repair. On the flywheel there are two adjustable mounting bolts that hold the fly wheel to the chassis of the bike. Back off the two locking nuts on the axle first and then loosen the adjuster nuts equal amounts on both sides of the flywheel and this should give you enough slack to get the belt back on and then tighten both sides of the adjuster equal turns so it will stay turn and in line and then re-lock the axle nuts.. I hope this will help. Sam A.

Q:

Why is the console on my Proform Cardio Cross Trainer 820 elliptical not working?

A:

Here is a link for the owner's manual on this elliptical trainer: Owner's Manual . As shown in the manual, this elliptical console is powered by batteries (4 "D" batteries). The female plugs are for media (home stereo, portable stereo, computer, etc.).

If you install the batteries and the console still does not work, I provided the technical information below that includes the wiring diagram and console information. I also included the resistance calibration procedure that you may need once you get the console working. This technical information should help you if the console will not power up after installing the batteries. If you need parts, you can order them from the Sears PartsDirect website. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . The full model number of your elliptical is likely 831.283521 or 831.283520.

If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details.

Q:

Why won’t the resistance change on my Proform 820 model 831.283521?

A:

Your Proform 820 has a resistance motor that moves a strap with magnets on it closer to the flywheel to create resistance on the pedals. If the batteries are weak, they might still operate the console, but not have enough power to operate the resistance motor. Be sure the batteries are new.

To test the resistance motor and the resistance strap, you need to remove the right side panel of the product. With the side panel removed you can check the cable that moves the resistance strap to be sure it is in place. Pull the resistance strap close to the flywheel and see if the pedals have resistance.

Disconnect the wire connector from the resistance motor and check the voltage across the yellow and blue wires. When you adjust the resistance up or down, you should read 12 volts dc across the yellow and blue wires. If you have this voltage, the resistance motor is defective. If there is no voltage the potentiometer in the resistance motor, the console, or the wiring harness between the resistance motor and the console are bad.
