Question and Answers

My one year old Proform 480 treadmill stops and the motor smells hot. I already bought the lube for the belt didn't help.

Having a Treadmill is very good to have so if you don't want to work out you can just hop on the Treadmill for a quick walk. While you are waiting on an expert to answer your question, A suggestion I have is to visit Sears Home Services website to set service with a Sears technician. I attached the link below. hope this helps!

I attached the calibration procedure. Try calibrating the treadmill for the speed and incline.

If you do that and still have the problem I would tend to think there is an issue with the motor or controller. If you have a DC voltmeter (or multi-meter) we can check the motor out to see what condition it is in. To do that, follow the motor test procedure.

Motor Test Procedure

  • Unplug the treadmill from the wall.
  • Disconnect the red and black motor leads from the motor at the controller board.
  • Connect your meter to the leads and set meter to read for DC volts.
  • Plug in the treadmill and put the safety key in place to operate.
  • Walk on the treadmill to 3mph. Do this by manually walking; do not press the speed increase button.
  • At 3mph, check your meter to see what voltage is reading.
  1. The motor is a DC motor and will generate electricity if manually turned.
  2. At 3MPH, the motor should be generating no less than 28VDC. If the motor is reading less than that at 3MPH, the motor is bad.

If the motor checks out bad, I would replace the motor and controller as a set. If the motor checks out good, the problem will likely be the controller board.
