Question and Answers

Q:

I need to change the lamps in my refrigerator.

A:

replacing refrigerator lights can be complicated by getting the cover off. I located a similar question that has instructions for a slightly different model number but you can check if you like to see if it looks like yours. The expert will review and respond for this model. I also added the schematics for your model at Sears Parts Direct which might help.

To replace the light bulbs on your refrigerator please follow the steps below:

  • unplug the power cord from the outlet.
  • Remove refrigerator shelves.
  • Release the hooks on both ends of the light shield and pull the shield down to remove it.
  • Turn the bulb counterclockwise.
  • Assembly is the reverse order of disassembly.

Thanks Luis. The instructions you gave are the same ones that are in the manual which are unclear. There are no "hooks" on the ends of the light shield. I was, however, able to get the light shield off by placing a screwdriver behind the shield in the two grooves and prying the shield loose. My other questions is that the lights remain on continuously even while the doors are closed. After a while, the assembly overheats and shuts the lights off. When they cool down, they come back on and the cycle repeats. Could this be a faulty switch in the door or is it the computer board?

A:

There is a relay on the main control board housed on the back panel of the refrigerator that controls the lights along with the door switch. The main board and a new light socket harness assembly # 6621JK2003B will need to be installed. NOTE: There is a known issue with this model of Kenmore Elite refrigerator regarding the refrigerator lights staying on. The manufacturer warranty has been extended for the life of the refrigerator to cover this type of failure. The repair should be covered along with any damage that occurred to the light reflector and cover. I recommend that you call Sears at 1-800-469-4663 (1-800-4MY-HOME) to schedule a Sears Technician to fix this problem. You will likely need to agree to a service charge for the repair to be set up in the system. Once the technician visits your home and verifies that the failure is caused by this known issue, the parts and labor should be covered. Thank you for using Manage My Life.

This is exactly what is happening in my refrigerator. I ordered two new door switched that I will replace. My model number is 795-77249602. Until I get the switched installed, I would like to take out one of the lamps to reduce the heat. The instructions in the owners manual are not clear as to how to remove the lens cover. Can you give better instructions?
