Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

If your range has never had any service or parts replaced/installed and the serial number is in the range of VF122xxxxx through VF334xxxxx then this repair will be covered at no charge. If you serial number is not FV122xxxxx through VF334xxxxx then it would not be covered at no charge.

Your range has a power relay board that is likely faulty causing the surface element to stay on. In order to stop the burner from heating would require disconnecting the wires connecting the element from the power relay board. If you model fall in the serial number range then I would not disconnect any wires and leave the circuit breakers turned off and call 1-800-469-4663 for service. I added an image below of the wiring diagram and the location of the power relay board.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

Q:

What is wrong if my burner stays on and never shuts off?

A:

If the surface burner is staying ON the likely failure is the burner switch. If it's just the surface burner indicator light ON, it would be bad burner switch. If it's the HOT surface indicator light that is staying ON, it’s a bad radiant burner assembly. Without knowing the complete model number of your range I will not be able to provide any model specific part numbers.

Resubmit your question with the complete model number and additional details for model specific information, part numbers and instructions if needed.

When I turn my control for the stovetop off, it does not turn off. Kenmore 790.96122408 The indicator light is fine...it's the burner itself that does not respond when I reduce the temperature or turn it off sometimes.

You could have a bad element, a failed power control board or wiring failure in that circuit. The wiring diagram for your range is shown in the image below with that circuit for the right front burner traced in green and red. If you have a volt/ohm meter, you can carefully measure the live voltage at that burner terminal 1A with the control set to "off". This will help you check to see if you have that L1 leg of power to the burner that is traced in green. NOTE: You should only check that live voltage if you are completely confident in your technical ability to safely measure it. Wear properly safety equipment (electrical safety gloves and safety goggles) when conducting that test. Unplug the range while accessing internal components and preparing to conduct that test. Be sure that you unplug the range after that voltage check is completed . If you are not confident that you safely check that live voltage, then I recommend that you have a service technician complete this repair. Here is a link for the Sears Service website in case you need it: Sears Home Services .

If you get that L1 leg of voltage at the terminal 1A on the element then you can also check to see if you get the L2 leg of voltage out of that Surface Unit Power Control Board. If you get 240 volts at the element but it won't heat, then the element will need to be replaced. If that control board is bad, it will need to be replaced. Be sure that you unplug the range before accessing and replacing internal components.

You can order parts from the Sears PartsDirect website.
