Question and Answers

Q:

Why won't the lower oven on my Kenmore range model 790.98022800 heat after I cleaned it?

A:

The wiring diagram for your range is shown in the first image below. The lower oven element circuit is traced in red. There is a safety thermostat in this circuit that will prevent all of the lower oven elements from heating if it is "open". The second image below shows the location of this safety thermostat. If you unplug the range and remove the lower back panel, you should be able to access this thermostat and check it for continuity. Remove one wire and measure the resistance of this component with a volt/ohm meter. You should measure near zero ohms of resistance. If you detect an open load (Ol or infinite resistance) then the thermostat is bad and will need to be replaced. You can order a new thermostat from the Sears PartsDirect website. The part number for the thermostat is 318004902.

If the thermostat is okay, I recommend that you check the wiring connections of the lower oven element circuit on the control board (with the range still unplugged). If the wiring and the elements are okay, then you could have a failed control board. I recommend that you have a service technician diagnose and repair this type of problem. Q:

Hot Surface Light 79098022800 Kenmore Elite Electric range

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I will be more than happy to help with your range. Upon researching model 79098022800; I can understand your concern in having a properly working range in your home. I will be glad to help you today. This type of problem is caused by a failed (stuck) contact on one of the surface burner infinite switches. To diagnose this failure, a technician would unplug the range and access the infinite switches in the console by removing the upper back panel on the range. The technician would pull the wire connected to the P terminal of the infinite switch on the LF burner and dress pull it out of the way so that it does not contact the metal cabinet of the range or any other wires or contacts. The technician would then briefly plug the range back in to see if the “ELEMENT ON” light still stays on. If the light turns off with the P wire of the LF burner disconnected then the LF infinite burner switch needs to be replaced (with the range unplugged) to fix this problem. If the light stays on, then the range would be unplugged. The P wire would be replaced on the LF burner and the process would be repeated for the LR and RR burners. On the RF burner, the 4 and 4a wires would need to be pulled to diagnose this failure. Once the bad burner switch is identified, it will need to be replaced (with the range unplugged).

NOTE:

If you attempt to diagnose this failure yourself, be sure that you unplug the range when handling wires on the burner infinite switches and properly position the disconnected wires out of the way so that they do not short to other wires or the metal cabinet.

I trust this information will help you, we appreciate your business thank for choosing Sears.

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the fluctuating temp within the oven. I know how concerning that is to have happen.

You can manually adjust the oven temperature up to 35 degrees more or less than what's being displayed. Adjusting the oven temperature is covered in the owner's manual on page 33. For convenience, I have linked the manual below. Just click the link to be directed to the Parts Direct page to view and download it.
