A:

Why is my baking element not working on my Kenmore range model number 790.96604500?

If the broiler and the cook top burners work then your failure will be in the element, the wiring between the element and the electronic oven control board or the electronic control board.

Check the element for obvious visible damage.

  • Unplug the range
  • Carefully remove the screws on the inside back wall of the oven that secure the bake element (you may need to remove the oven door).
  • Pull the element into the oven cavity to check the wiring connections on the back of the element.
    • If you have a volt/ohm meter, you can pull one wire off of the element (with the range still unplugged) and check the resistance through the element. You will normally measure between 10 ohms and 30 ohms of resistance through the element. If it is open (measure infinite resistance) then it will need to be replaced.
  • If the element resistance is okay then I recommend checking the wiring connections for the element on the electronic oven control board.

If you do not feel comfortable performing this task I would strongly suggest scheduling service at 1-800-469-4663.
