I suspect something was mis-wired since the problem occured after the burner was replaced.  The wiring diagram below may be helpful to you.  Let me know if the image doesn't enlarge properly so you can see it.

Caution: Before attempting any repair, turn the power off first.

There is no exact way to determine whether that handle for model 790.9210912 will fit your range model 790.96414408 besides ordering that handle and trying it. The cost of that handle for model 790.9210912 costs around $34 and the screws cost about $4. You can order those parts from the Sears PartsDirect website. The part number for the handle is 316356201. The part number for the screws is 316422204. You will need 2 of those screws. The washers are the same for those models. NOTE: The original screws for that range are about 1/8" longer. That may or may not make a difference when you attempt to install that other door handle. If necessary, you may be able to replace the washers with thinner ones if that handle fits but the screws are slightly shorter than they should be.

We normally don't recommend that you interchange parts from various models in this manner. In this situation, if the thinner handle will fit properly and can be properly secured, then it should be safe to use and will not significantly affect the performance of the range.

I hope that this information helps, reply with additional details if you need more help.

sounds like it is too iffy - just following that a guy in the store said you could switch handles and ... my handle comes out for the door of the stove 2" or more. it is not tapered from the end where i need the space - it reaches that 2+" depth from the door fairly quickly. even thought about removing handle and getting something else but not sure what ... maybe a know or something. hope i can get back to you.

I agree that switching those handles does involve a slight risk. If you try to install that tapered handle, I recommend that you use the screws that are designed for that handle.
