Question and Answers

Q:

Oven only heats to 130 degrees.

A:

Thank you for your question. This is the time of year the oven is used more often.  First I would recommend trying to calibrate the oven temperature. The image below has the procedure to calibrate your model. If that does not resolve the temperature problem, then the heating element may be the issue. If you feel confident in checking the element, use the following.  Unplugging the range and remove the bottom panel inside the oven cavity (KEY 8 on the parts image). You should find thumb screws at the back of that bottom panel. Remove those screws and then pull that bottom panel up and back to release the front lip. You should then be able to lift that panel out of the oven. You can then replace that bake element as shown in this repair video: Bake Element Replacement .  You can also schedule a  technician at Sears Home Services to diagnose and make the necessary repairs. If further help is needed, please reply.  Thank you for using Manage My Life.

The links Barbara H sent gives good information for testing the bake element for your range. I recommend you follow the instructions to diagnose the problem.

This is a repair that most people can do themselves. Before removing the bake element, disconnect the power to the oven and feel all around the bake element for roughness. If the bake element has a spot that has bubbled up the element is bad and replacing the element will usually repair the oven.

Sometimes when the bake element fails it damages a relay on the oven control board (clock) and the clock has to be replaced also. I hope this hasn't happened to your range.

Q:

How do I fix the paint that has melted off of the control panel above the oven vent on my range model 790.96412407?

A:

I recommend that you clean the area thoroughly with a mild detergent and water. If you have some smoke stains that need to be cleaned off, I recommend that you use Bar Keepers Friend. This is a kitchen cleanser that has a mild polish abrasive that will not harm most surfaces. You can get this product in your local grocery store.

After thoroughly cleaning the area, you can likely touch up the control panel with paint. Here are the part numbers for the black and white paint that will match this range:

  • White touch-up paint -- 5303321319
  • Black touch-up paint -- 5303321321
You can order this paint from the Sears PartsDirect .

By cleaning the area and touching it up with paint, you can likely restore it to the original appearance. If not, you could order and replace the backguard panel.
