Question and Answers

Q:

Oven light stays on due to loose door

A:

A non working Oven is not something any of us want to see. If you are technically handy, this is a good site to get instruction and fix some things yourself. If you do not feel confident doing your own repairs, an option is to visit Sears Home Services and use the scheduler. While you wait for the expert to review your model, you can check the bottom link for some possibilities. Hope this is of help.

To repair the range, the door hinges and the receptacles the hinge slides into must be replaced.

Some models and serial numbers have been listed on a bulletin and Sears will replace the parts free.

I recommend you get the complete model and serial number off the plate on the range and call 1-800-4MYHOME (1-800-469-4663). Give the information to the agent and they will tell you if your range is included.

If you want to replace the hinges, reply on this thread and send the complete model number. I will send you the part number you need and instructions for replacing the hinges.

Jimmy K. Thank you for your response. This has been a nightmare. We currently have a bunge cord holding the door closed so the light will stay off-it looks like a redneck kitchen!!! I called as you suggested and ended up talking to 4 people last evening, 2 of whom I could understand and could seem to understand me. Parts transferred me to Warranty and I was put on hold, but eventually the music stopped and a computerized voice asked for my 10 digit phone # and led me through a menu that eventually ended the call with Whirlpool. It said this is not business hours, please call back. I called Sears back this morning and talked to 4 people. Fortunately the last person was someone I could understand. I try to be tolerant, but it is frustrating to tell someone several times that I did not say what they think I said and to ask them several times to repeat because I have no idea what they said. The last person was in the parts dept again and eventually said yes it is on a list and was poorly designed, but no Sears will not pay for it. So I have a part coming at a cost of $57.16 and assurance that it will be accompanied by instructions. The model is 790.96224401. No one seemed to want the SN. This stove was new and put into a new house in 2005. Again, thanks for your help. I needed to vent my frustration, but I will also write Sears. I am very disappointed in the whole experience.

Brenda, I am very sorry for the way you were treated on the phone. We have too much of that and it is not what the company wants. I hope upper management is addressing the problem. I will send you instructions for replacing the door hinges in case you need them. Replacing the hinges and receptacles is not a hard job and you might prefer to just do it yourself. If you have questions, reply on this thread and I will be glad to help.

Hi Jimmy, The part came today and the new hinges are in. We did not change the receptacles as it did not seem necessary, but will keep them of course, just in case. The light is out and the bungee cord has been put away. Thanx for your help.

Brenda, join the club. I had nothing but angst in trying to get some help from Sears yesterday. After 6 calls I gave up. I was transferred to centers that had nothing to do with an oven. For instance one person (the technical center) said she could not handle my question but would transfer me to a person who would. Two minutes later I get a recording that states "This number is for questions about water filters only, nice, I was calling about a stove.......Sorry but Sears is sorely lacking in the self help area. I guess its the new way, you have two choices, either pay a hefty service/parts fee or get a new stove.

Joe, I'm sorry to hear things have not changed much. Fortunately we have not had further problems with the oven after installing the new part ourselves with Jimmy K's instructions. I did send a letter and was called back with an offer of 20% off on a Sears appliance of my choice. Even using the offer was an interesting experience. The salesperson was so arrogant about it after he asked why I had this offer. He told me most of the people answering in foreign countries had masters degrees. I told him their masters degree and my masters degree did not help us understand one another unfortunately. After I say I have a problem with my oven, I don't expect to be asked several times if I am calling about an appliance? I did think the first person to represent this company should at least know an oven is an appliance. I wish you luck.

Q:

Why won't the oven door close securely on my Kenmore range?

A:

Most likely you will need to replace the existing oven door hinges with the Hinge kit part# 5304445529. The hinge kit will consist of both hinges and both receptacles. I added the instructions in the images below.

I recommend calling a service technician to remove the original hinges and receivers and to install the new hinge kit.
