Question and Answers

Q:

Why won’t the left front element heat properly on my Kenmore electric range model 790.96219407 even after replacing the element?

A:

The first wiring schematic show below illustrates the voltage paths through the left front element. The red line shows the L1 path of voltage. The yellow line shows the path of L1 voltage that travels through the closed simmer select switch to the relay that closes to provide the Neutral path for the simmer mode. The circuit through the red and pink wires is apparently working. According to your symptoms, the L2 circuit shown in green is apparently not making it to the switch and the element. It is likely that the contact in the simmer select board (circled in blue) is likely open. You indicated that you replaced the simmer select feature but you did not say that you replaced the simmer select control board. It is likely that you will need to replace this component based on your symptoms.

I provided the full wiring diagram and schematic in the second image below in case you need it.

Q:

Why is the left front element of my Kenmore electric range not working?

A:

It sounds like the wiring harness is shorted or incorrectly wired. In the wiring diagram provided I have traced out the path of voltage for the front left element. You need to read 220 volts across L1 on the surface unit switch to P2 on the simmer select board. If you read 220 volts there, the problem is between the simmer select board & the element or between L1 & the element.

Please remember to use extreme caution when working with voltage.
