Should there be an oven bottom panel covering the bake element?


Yes, according to the model number you submitted there should be an oven bottom panel (key#8) covering the bake element as shown in the image I added below. It should also have a couple of screws securing the bottom panel (key#43). The oven bottom will hide the bake element and prevent any food or drippings from getting on the bake element which is likely causing your oven to smoke. You will need to let it smoke and burn off and then it will quit smoking as long as nothing makes contact with the bake element. The part number of the bottom oven panel is 316400601 and the screws needed to secure the bottom panel are part number 3131732. You will need to order two screws if both are missing.
