Thank you all for the responses to my inquiry re the melted foil in the bottom of my oven. The replies were very helpful, especially the links there were provided. There is a part number for a replacement bottom panel but the product is currently back-ordered. So, for the present time I will use the suggestion about the self cleaning feature.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Do NOT remove the oven floor and leave the hidden bake element exposed. It was not designed to have the hidden bake element exposed. Leave the floor installed as it is or replace it with a new one if it does not pass the home inspection.

The oven floor #316400601 for Kenmore range model 790.96213407 can be ordered from Sears Parts Direct.

On something like this, someone with a meter will need to make some checks in order to determine where the root cause of the problem is. It sounds like either L1 or L2 is shorted to ground somewhere.
