Q:

installing a baking element in an oven 790.96012401

A:

Thank you for being Sears’ valued member and for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your question about installing a part in your Kenmore oven model 790.96012401. I am so sorry the bake element needs to be replaced. I will be happy to help you with this. I have included the link below for our range repair guide. We have a step-by-step guide for replacing this part. Please keep in mind that it is a guide to cover multiple models so the images may look a little different from your range.

SAFETY WARNING: Disconnect the power supply before beginning your repair to prevent the risk of electrical shock which can result in property damage, serious personal injury or even death. You can do this at the circuit breaker since you do not want to pull the oven from the wall. If you are not comfortable completing this repair, you can set up service at www.SearsHomeServices.com or by calling 1-800-469-4663 (1-800-4MY-HOME).

I hope this answers your question. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

Q:

Heating Element 79096012401 Kenmore Electric range

A:

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is trouble with the range.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Kenmore Range model number 79096012401.

TESTING ELECTRIC RANGE ELEMENTS:

1.  Unplug th oven from the wall outlet.

2.  Remove the racks from inside when you have the oven door opened.

3.  The elements have a screw on each side and need to remove the screws and pull the wires from the
    elements out.

4.  Turn the dial on a multimeter to Rx1k.  Place one lead from the meter on the terminal at the end
of the element, then place the other lead on the end of the other termial.  The needle on the
multimeter should register between 19 and 115 ohms.  Replace the element if no reading registers
    on the meter.

5.  If the elements are good then take the meter and test both wires that you hook to the bake/broil
    elements.

Please "RESUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS IF THERE IS ANY OTHER PROBLEMS".

Thank you for your understanding in this matter and I hope we can help you with your future questions and repairs.  Thank you for choosing Sears and using our SearsPartsDirect.com.

Q:

Why won't my bake and broiler elements heat up, when my top burners and clock work? 790.96012401

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
I am sorry to hear of the oven heating issue you are having with the range, I know how frustrating that is to have occur.
Since the electronic board supplies the oven and surface units on different power legs, this issue typically indicates a shorted power relay. In your case, I suspect a shorted oven relay that supplies it with power since a defective bake and broil element at the same time is almost nonexistent.
A replacement electronic board and overlay will more than likely be needed to solve this issue. For convenience, I have included blue links below for both parts. Just click the links to be directed to the PartsDirect page to view and purchase if needed.

Electronic Control Board for Model 790.96012401

Board Overlay for Model 790.96012401

If you would feel more confident have a Sears Home Service technician help assist with the diagnosis/repair, you can call 1-800-349-5071, or click here to be directed to the page to set up service.
Hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
