Thank you for your question.

I can understand wanting to know why the bake and broil elements are not working. It sounds like a component in the range shorted and caused the pop.

I would suggest that you first REMOVE POWER to the range.
  • Then locate and remove the back panel on the range to gain access to the electronic oven control boards.
  • On the back of the control look for the L2 and L2 out wire connections on the board. It that L2 out is bad it will not give you power to the oven and broil and may have damaged the simmer board.
  • I suggest that you look for burn marks on the control board and simmer control board and at least ck the oven and broil elements for being shorted if only to physically check the elements, but it would be better if you could do a resistance and grounding check on those elements with a meter. It would not be good to spend all that money for boards and then pop them again.

You may have to replace both electronic oven control board and the simmer board.

The reason the others are not working is the relays on the board are double throw relays and if they have shorted it will prevent the other circuits from working.

Unless you are confident of your diagnostic skills, I would suggest you have a technician check out the range.

If you need more information please include the complete model number so I can be more precise in my answer. It is located behind the storage drawer on the main body of the range.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I hope this will help.

I do not see any issues with incorrect hinges being installed on your range with that model and serial number. Since the door is not closing properly, you probably will need to replace the hinges. You can use the hinge kit that is part number 5304445529 for that repair. Here is a direct link for that part: Hinge Kit for Kenmore Range 790.96010400 . That second link that Marc H. posted in the above response should help you install the hinges. If you need more help, reply with additional details.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .
