I know that it can be very frustrating to have issues with your range. The element "ON" indicator is turned on and off by each one of the surface element burner switches. One of the switches is likely faulty. There is a terminal on each one of the burner switches marked or labeled with a letter "P". When any one of the switches are turned on, terminal "P" will have 120 volts supplied to "ON" indicator and it turns on. One way to determine which switch is faulty is to disconnect the power cord from the power source and then access the burner switches. Disconnect just the one wire connected to terminal "P" and make sure the disconnected wire is not touching any metal ground or any other terminals. Plug the power cord in and see if the "ON" indicator is on or off. If it's off, the switch you pulled the wire off from is the faulty switch. If the light stays on, disconnect the power cord and reconnect the wire. Go to the next switch and remove the wire from terminal "P" and repeat the process until you find that the "ON" indicator stays off and then replace that burner switch. You may be able to determine which burner switch is causing this problem on your own through a process of elimination. Unplug the range and access the burner switches as shown in this brief repair video: Electric Range Infinite Burner Switch Replacement . Once you find the switch that causes the Element On light to go out when that purple wire is disconnected, you can order a replacement switch from the Sears PartsDirect website. Be sure that you unplug the range before accessing internal components and replacing that switch. The video provided above shows the burner switch replacement procedure. I hope this helps. I can understand why you would want to make sure it's safe. The range is fine to use as long as the glass is not broken. The scorch marks are from the constant use of the burners, and the heat cycling while their on. If you don't feel confident about using it like this you can replace the burners. I have include the instructions below. If you need any further assistance, please reply to this thread.
