Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

If the oven comes back on and begins to heat when the power cord is plugged in, the electronic oven control/clock assembly has most likely failed. The electronic oven control board has a bake and broil relay which is part of the control board. The contact in one of the two relays has most likely welded shut.

This may be the issue. If not, please reply and I will be glad to assist you further.

Based on your description, that electronic oven control board (part 316207522) will probably need to be replaced. Since the oven element heats as soon as the house circuit breaker for the range is reset to restore electrical power, this indicates that the electronic control board probably has a stuck relay. The sensor probe may cause the oven to overheat once it is set in the bake or broil mode but it will not cause the oven to immediately heat once the electrical power is restored to the range. There is a chance that a broken heating element in the oven that would cause this failure as well. The elements in the oven will need to be checked if you intend to repair the range rather than replacing it. If the elements are both okay, then replacing the electronic oven control board should fix your problem. You will normally need to order and replace the overlay when replacing the electronic oven control board. The part number for the white color of overly is 316220817. The parts for this repair will likely cost just over $200 if you plan on fixing the range.

If you decide to repair the range, you can order parts from this page: Kenmore Range Model 790.95662100 Parts . Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breaker or unplug the range before accessing and replacing internal components. You can access the electronic control board by removing the back panel behind the console.

If you decide to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services . The labor for the repair would probably be around $150.

If you decide to replace the range, you can view current models on the Sears.com website.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

You guys are awesome!! I think your assessments are dead on. I noticed the relay on the EOC panel and thought I would se if maybe it had a mechanical switch that was simply "stuck" in the closed position. I gently tapped it a few times with the back of a screwdriver handle as a last effort before ordering a new part and go figure, the unit responded like a champ. It has been operating flawlessly without any problem but I will keep a close eye on it and will not plan any timed baking when we do not plan on being home. We will likely replace the unit anyway for our peace of mind but I do appreciate all of the great responses

Q:

Why does my Kenmore electric range display the F1 error code and the lower oven will not operate correctly?

A:

From what you described it sounds like the broil relay on the EOC, electronic oven control is shorted. Something like this will require making some voltage & resistance checks with a meter to confirm the diagnosis.

Please see the images provided for more details cover this type of diagnosis.

Be sure to disconnect power before attempting repairs.
