Thanks for adding that model number. This type of failure is caused by a stuck contact on one of the burner switches. The wiring diagram in the first image below shows the circuit for that Element On light circuit traced in purple. You may be able to determine which burner switch is causing this problem on your own through a process of elimination. Unplug the range and access the burner switches as shown in this brief repair video: Electric Range Infinite Burner Switch Replacement . You don't have to remove any switches yet. Just access the back of those switches for this test. With the range still unplugged , remove the purple wires off of one of the switches as shown in the second image. (The purple wire will be connected to the P terminal on all switches except the right front burner -- it is connected to terminal 4 on that switch.) Tape the spade connector on the end of that wire with electrical tape so that it won't short out against the metal cabinet. Briefly plug the range back in to see if the Element On light remains lit with that wire disconnected. If it does, then you can unplug the range and repeat that process until you find the switch that is causing your problem. Once you find the switch that causes the Element On light to go out when that purple wire is disconnected, you can order a replacement switch from the Sears PartsDirect website. Be sure that you unplug the range before accessing internal components and replacing that switch. The video provided above shows the burner switch replacement procedure.

This information should help you fix this range problem on your own. If you need more help, reply with additional details.

I don't feel capable of dealing with this issue myself and still don't want to pay for a service man. What I want to know is if it is fine to continue using the range (I have been for the past month), and not worry about causing a fire and burning my house down.

Bought my Kenmore electric range model 790 9641 in 2008. In March 2010 the 'element on' light wouldn't go out with no burners on.I have no record of paying for repairs, so it must have been under warranty, and the problem was fixed. Now 3 years later, I have the same problem. I've been using it for about a month now. I don't feel capable of dealing with this issue myself and still don't want to pay for a service man. What I want to know is it safe to continue using the range and not worry about causing a fire and burning my house down. barbara

Hello Barbara. You can continue to use the range. Everyone who uses the range should be informed about this failure. That light is staying on due to a failed or stuck contact in a surface burner control switch. That particular failure will not cause a fire hazard. I recommend that you have the failure repaired even though it does not pose an immediate danger.

You should not use any utensil on the burners that is more than 1 inch larger or smaller than the burner.

Sliding a heavy pot across the glass top will scratch the glass and the scratches can not be removed.

Pressure canners are not specifically mentioned in the owners manual. Pressure canners can be used on a glass top range. The bottom of the pot must be smooth, not concave or convex and within 1 inch of the diameter of the burner you are using.

Any spills on the glass top should be cleaned up immediately. Turn the burner off and let the glass cool until the hot surface light goes off. Clean the spill up with a detergent that does not have abrasives in it. Barkeepers Friend and Bon Ami are 2 good detergents for glass top ranges.

A spill with sugar in it will pit the burner and the damage can not be repaired if the spill is not cleaned immediately.

Many people can on glass top ranges successfully. The dangers listed above apply to all cooking.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern. If the clock/oven control was working before the move, the failure is likely the lack of voltage or Neutral to the oven control board and not an oven control board failure unless the 4 wire power cord was mis-wired. I recommend checking the 4 wire power cord installation. I added the instructions in the image below. I also traced out the L1 and Neutral circuit needed in order to power up the clock/oven control board. The voltage at the terminal block should measure 120 volts across the red and white wire and it should measure 120 volts across the black and white wire and it should measure 240 across the black and red wire.

The oven control must have 120 volts in order to power up. It needs line one (L1) and it needs Neutral. If it's not getting the L1 or Neutral, the clock/oven control will not power up. _NOTE: I do not recommend checking voltage unless you have experience and feel safe and confident in doing so, otherwise I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your range.
