Q:

Kenmore Electric Range model #790.9421940.D, bake doesn't work

A:

I understand the concern with the broil turning on its own. While you are waiting for an expert to respond, I have attached a helpful link below that may provide information to assist you with your question.

That link for a previous answer that Yadira B. posted in the above response describes a similar situation in a different model of Kenmore range. Although that failure is not common, it does occur. The broil element is probably heating constantly due to a stuck or "welded" relay in that electronic oven control board (part 316557118). Replacing that control board should fix your problem. You will normally need to order and replace the overlay (part 316419109) for that control board at the same time. I also recommend that you unplug the range and examine the bake and broil elements for damage. That link for a previous answer describes how to test those elements using a volt/ohm meter. It is a good idea to check those elements before replacing that control board. A short circuit to ground in one of those oven heating elements could have caused that control board to fail.

You can order parts from this page: Kenmore Range Model 790.9421940D Parts . Be sure that you unplug the range before accessing internal components and replacing parts.

If you perform this repair yourself, then it should only cost about $150. Based on the age of your range, it would probably be more economical to repair the unit rather than replacing the entire range. It is not likely that you will have further problems once you replace that control board.

I hope that this information helps. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .
