Question and Answers

Q:

Oven not working 79094112407 Kenmore Electric range

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com. I am sorry to hear about the inoperable oven cavity, I know how frustrating that is.

Typically, if the oven cavity doesn't work but the surface units do, there is a short in the relay from the control board to the oven cavity. Usually it is referred to as a communication error. In most cases, the control board will need to be replaced in order to solve the problem, but it wouldn't hurt to open up the access and see if any of the connectors came loose during the move.

Usually you can gain access to the control board and wires by opening up the access panel behind the control panel. That should give you access to the board and wires to check connectivity. Just make sure you unplug the range before accessing the electronics.

If everything looks secure, chances are a replacement board will be needed to solve the issue. If you have a multimeter and have the training/experience to test the board, you can verify the relay on the board is defective before replacement. If you would feel more confident having a Sears Technician assist with the diagnosis/repair of the range, click here to be directed to the Sears Home Services page to set up service.

If you need the control board, I would also highly recommend a replacement overlay with the board. For convenience, I have included blue links below that you may click on to be directed to the PartsDirect site to view and purchase the parts if necessary.

Q:

Can I use my Kenmore oven with the glass window broken?

A:

The outer oven door glass prevents the heat from escaping the oven & keeps the operator from getting burned by hot surfaces. I would not recommend using the oven with the glass broken.

Q:

Can you give me instructions for installing an oven heating element?

A:

Sometimes when an element shorts out it ruins the relay that closes, to send power to the element. It sounds like that is what happened to you. If so, you will have to replace the electronic oven control (EOC).

To be sure your EOC needs to be replaced, turn the power off to the range, and pull the bake element inside the oven. This is easier if you remove the oven door, I am sending instructions for removing the door.

Arrange the element so that the wires don't touch anything, and restore the power. Turn the oven on to bake and touch the leads from a volt/ohm meter to the wires on the element. You should read 220-230 volts AC to the element.

The part number for the EOC is 316418206 and it costs around $125.00. Replacement parts don't normally come with installation instructions. If you connected the wires to the element when you installed it, it should work. You will need to remove the overlay from the EOC if you replace it and stick it on the new one.
