Thank you for your question. I can understand your concern about the broil element staying on. This type of problem usually does indicate the control has failed. Sometimes resetting the control will correct various problems. To reset the control, disconnect the power for 30 seconds and then reconnect it. If the element still remains on, the control # 316455400 will need to be replaced. Now, yes the element can be removed to use the stove top without causing any problems. To remove the element, first disconnect the power. Now, remove the screws holding the element in place and pull it forward. Disconnect the wires now and be sure to tape them off very good. Do not use the oven now, only the top burners. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

There is one of two possible causes; the control board has a stuck/welded relay contact or one of the two heating elements has shorted out. If you see the entire element glowing red then I would say the control board is faulty. If only a small portion of the heating element is glowing red; I would suspect a shorted heating element. The oven control board is part #316455400 and you will likely need the overlay too. The bake element is part #316225001 and the broil element is #316203200.

Q:

Why is one burner on my Kenmore stovetop not working?

A:

On something like this you will need to check voltage with a meter in order to determine what part has failed. With the burner turned on go across L1 to L2 on the switch with your volt meter, if you have 220 volts the burner or wiring to the burner needs replaced. If you do not read 220volts you will need to replace the surface unit switch. Please see the diagram provided for more details.

SAFETY NOTICE: Be sure to disconnect power to the appliance before performing any repairs. If you are not comfortable with doing any voltage checks that might be recommended, please contact your local service provider for repairs. Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others.
