Q:

Gas oven not heating up, but gas smell present

A:

Oven's are appliances we use daily so when it starts to have problems with it, it can be really frustrating. While you are waiting on an expert to answer your question, I found a great link in the Manage My Life website. You can also set service with a Sears technician to resolve this problem. I have attached the links below. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the link. The gas smell is only prevelant when the oven ISN'T heating up properly. When using the range, broiler or broiler / over work around, there is no smell of gas.

Hello Erica. That note that you saw on the gas valve assembly was correct. That component rarely fails. Since the bake igniter is glowing, this indicates that your safety gas valve is probably okay. Your most likely failure is that bake igniter even though it is glowing. I provided the theory of operation for that ignition system in the image below. Here is a brief video that also explains that ignition operation: Gas Ignition Operation . The common method that a technician will use to verify the failure of the igniter would be to check the amp draw through the wire between the igniter and the safety gas valve using a clamp-on ammeter. That test is illustrated in the video. If you do not have a clamp-on ammeter (most people don't have that specialized meter) then you will probably be able to fix this problem by replacing that igniter without making that amp draw check. If you do have an ammeter, you can check for the 3.2 amps when that igniter is glowing for ignition. NOTE: Follow electrical safety guidelines when conducting that live amp draw check. Wear electrical safety gloves and safety goggles. Unplug the range when live testing is completed .

If that igniter is bad, you can order it from this page: Igniter for Kenmore Gas Range 790.78819402 .

Be sure that you unplug the range and shut off the gas supply before accessing and replacing that igniter. Here is a brief repair video that shows how to replace that igniter: Gas Range Igniter Replacement .

These tips should help you fix this oven heating problem. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .
