Question and Answers

Q:

Power burner lights, but flames only go part way around 79078779407 Kenmore Gas range

A:

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com. I will be more then happy to assist you. Looking at the information on this Gas range when people clean those burner covers they accidentally replace them on the wrong burner. Just make sure the correct burner cover goes on the right burner. There all set up for specific gas amounts. So what it sounds like is there is a smaller burner cover on this burner that is not distributing the gas evenly. Try moving those covers around and see what happens. Hope this information has help you. If you are not comfortable doing this repair you can Click Here to schedule a technician or call toll free 1-800-469-4663. Any further questions or concerns. You will have to post a new question because at this time I can not reply to any comments. Again, Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com.

I understand how upsetting this situation would be. I see youi have found the normal process to correct. Those instructions are correct. If you press Stop/Clear and hold for 3 seconds, the door should open. If the Lock light is off and the door is still shut, I would try setting a self clean cycle, then pressing the Stop/Clear again to cancel. Wait for the door latch hook to fully retract before opening the oven door. If the door still does not open, a technician needs to service the oven. Do not try to force the door as this will cause a problem with the lock assembly. If needed, you can schedule a Sears technician here; Sears Home Services . If further assistance is needed, please reply. Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Q:

Why does my Kenmore gas range model 79078779407 smell like gas and take longer when preheating?

A:

The excerpt from your installation guide in the first image below shows how to remove the bottom oven panel and flame spreader so that you can observe the flame in the oven. I recommend that you observe the flame to see how it is igniting and burning. If the flame height is improper, the air shutter will need to be adjusted.

If the burner is igniting and then shutting off intermittently while preheating the oven before it gets up to the proper temperature, then you likely have a problem with the igniter. The gas valve will only open when the igniter resistance decreases enough to allow the proper current flow through the circuit. The igniter resistance normally decreases to a point where this proper current flow occurs when it heats up. If the igniter is weak, the resistance could be on the verge of the resistance limit. The gas valve could be shutting off due to high resistance through the igniter even though the igniter continues to glow and heat. A technician would normally measure the amp draw through the wire going between the igniter and the gas valve. If the amp draw is low, the igniter will need to be replaced to fix this problem. I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair this type of problem. If the above description seems to fit your situation and you feel comfortable with replacing the igniter, you may be able to resolve this problem yourself.
