Q:

Oven Range handle screws too short 79078733400

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your oven handle. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number79078733400. If you have the original screws for it, they are the correct lenght. The problem is that the screws get hot when the oven is being used and with the screws being hot inside a plastic hole it makes the plastic soft and the screws do not sit in the hole properly. I did not see any repair kit or changes made to the part at this time. I can recommend using a heat resistant adhesive that can be used on the threading of the screws and some in the hole the screws goes in to. If you have further questions please let me know. Thanks for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com and good luck!

Javier_G, The original screws that are currently in the handle are only 2" in length. They only go in a thread or two. If you google the issue there are multiple cases of customers with the same issue. Some received replacement screws from Sears which were in deed longer in length. One customer references 2 1/8 inch screws. I think the issue spans several models of oven ranges. The part # of the handle reference is 5304458312. This seems to be a defect in the original build. The handle should not be falling off every week or so. Further assistance would be appreciated. Regards, Robert

The original screw is under 2 inches long 1.81 to be exact per manufacturers part list. Screw specs Screw,..wafer head ,10-24 x 1.81 ,(2) ,handle mtg. part number 316001002. The parts list does not list any other screws for the door handle. The heat the screws carry melt to the hole the screw is in to a certain piont to where the plastic hole is not hard enough to hold the screws threads. Have you already replaced the screws before? If so where were they purchased? What part number did you order?

I have not replaced the screws which is why I am still having this issue. I cannot find replacement screws anywhere which is why I am trying to reach out to Sears. I called multiple times and no one seems to be able to help. This is an obvious design flaw and the appropriate action would be for Sears to send me replacement screws. However, no ones seems to be able to help me. Sherman_G, The model the customer service rep gave me for my range was incorrect. The correct model is 79078733406. I retrieved this model # directly from the range. Can you please check the door handle kit part # on this model #. Specifically, I am trying to identify how long the screws for the handle should be. The original ones, as stated before, are only 2' in length and are too short. Thank you - Robert

Check to see if the broil burner works in the oven. If the broil burner works, then I recommend that you pull out the bottom panel in the oven cavity and check to see whether the igniter on the bake burner glows when the oven is set in the bake mode. Here is a link for a brief video that shows how the ignition system works in your oven: Gas Ignition Operation . If that bake igniter is not glowing when the oven is set in the bake mode, then you could have a problem with the electronic oven control board, the bake igniter or the safety gas valve. If the igniter is glowing but the bake burner will not light, then you probably have a bad igniter (even though it is glowing).

These general tips may help you determine the cause of your problem. If you need parts, you can order them from this page: Kenmore Range Model 790.78733406 Parts . Be sure that you unplug the range before accessing and replacing internal components.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .
