On something like this I recommend having the burner & igniter checked. It sounds like either a weak igniter or the burner ports are blocked or burned out. I have included a link to our PartsDirect webpage where you can order the parts. Just click on the blue link below.

Oven Ignitor for Model 790.78653602

Oven Burner for Model 790.78653602

Another possibility is expansion & contraction noise from the flame spreader or bottom panel.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

SAFETY NOTICE: Be sure to disconnect power to the appliance before performing any repairs. If you are not comfortable with doing any voltage checks that might be recommended, please contact your local service provider for repairs. Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others.

I don't think its the expansion of the flame diffuser making the popping sounds. I've removed the flame spreader and observed the glow bar igniting gas multiple times, each time it takes more than 1 min to ignite the gas. The burner looks in good shape, the flame is even with no evidence of corroded ports. Is the igniter the suspected part, at least to start with?

A:

Yes I agree to start with the ignitor. It should not take 1 min to ignite the gas, generally only 5 to 20 seconds max.

sorry, but this is a gas oven not electric. It is an igniter not an element. Can you offer any tests that I can perform to determine if the igniter is bad? Is it a spark igniter or a glow igniter? is there a way to test it with a meter?

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The model number you provided is not a valid model. I will assume the correct model number is 790.78653602 and I will base my reply on this model.

If you do not see the broil glow bar igniter glowing, it could have a broken igniter or it could have a faulty electronic oven control or a faulty oven safety valve.

In order to properly diagnose which component is faulty will require a volt/Ohm meter. You could start by disconnecting the power cord from the power source.

Remove and disconnect the broil igniter. Use the Ohm meter to check the broil igniter for continuity/resistance. Place the two Ohm meter leads into the two ends of the igniter plug and check to see if measures any resistance/continuity. If it does, then it is likely Okay. If the broil igniter will glow then it is likely too weak to pull enough current/amperage to open the gas valve and the broil igniter will need to be replaced.

If the igniter is Okay, and it does not glow, the most likely failure is the electronic oven control/clock assembly. To access the oven control, remove the panel from behind the control panel. Disconnect the power cord from the power source before removing the rear panel. On back of the oven control board you will see a 15 pin wire connector with 13 wires connected. The voltage supply to the broil igniter can be measured with the voltage meter across the blue wire and the white after starting the broil cycle. Leave the 15 pin connector connected to the control board when measuring the voltage. If you do not measure 120 volts, the electronic control board is faulty and will need to be replaced. You will also need to order the clock overlay too. You will not be able to peel the old clock overlay off and re-stick on the new control because it will not stick. NOTE: I do not recommend measuring the voltage to the broil igniter unless you have experience and feel safe and confident in doing so; otherwise I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your range.

I know that it can be very difficult to have issues with your range. It sounds like the igniter is weak. If the glow bar type of igniter is on but not lighting the burner, I would recommend replacing the igniter. The heat from the igniter generates a current draw that allows the safety valve to open. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, just click on this link to schedule service: Sears Home Services . I hope this helps. If you need further assistance, please reply to this thread.
