Q:

79078639601# kenmore rangeoven door wont open

A:

Thank you for choosing ManageMyLife.com and allowing us to help you. It is always an inconvenience when we experience an issue with a major appliance like this Kenmore gas range during the holidays. I have provided an image below with directions to unlock the oven door. Click here to download the owner's manual and view page 8 for more details. If you have a failed door lock mechanism, service will probably be needed. To repair this problem, someone will need to disassemble the range and check the operation of the door lock mechanism.

SAFETY NOTICE: Be sure to disconnect power to the appliance before performing any repairs. If you are not comfortable with doing any voltage checks that might be recommended, please contact your local service provider for repairs. Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others. Wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts.

You can unplug the range and shut off the gas supply. Pull the range out from the wall and check the back of the range for a door lock motor assembly like the one shown in the image below. The door lock assembly is circled in green. You will need to remove the lower back panel to access this area on most ranges. Sometimes you can access the component by removing the upper back panel. If the door lock motor assembly is in this area, it will have a latch rod that is attached to a cam on the assembly. If you can pull the latch rod up and out of the cam, you should be able to unlock the oven door manually. You can then check the wiring connections between the door lock assembly and the electronic control board on the range (with the range still unplugged ). If the wiring connections are okay, you may need to replace the door lock motor assembly.

You can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Click here to schedule service online at the Sears Home Services web site. Be sure to take advantage of that 20% discount coupon that Sears provides when service is set on line. You will need to print this coupon out on your computer's printer and give it to your technician upon arrival on the day of service.

If you have any follow-up questions, please continue our conversation on this existing thread.

Thanks Jacqueline: The on-line manual was clear on time set, but didn't provide any info on switching time function. However, by holding the time set button down for five seconds, it finally switched to functions, and by using up/down buttons I could change over from 24 to 12 hr. clock. George
