Question and Answers

Q:

oven takes long time to reach temperature

A:

Most cooking requires the oven to reach a set temperature before beginning the baking time. If the oven is slow to heat or won't keep heating this would be a problem in a busy day. While you wait for the expert to review, you can check the two links below for some help if you like. The first is how to calibrate the oven and the second deals with the burner not staying lit. Hope this helps toward saving you some time.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern. The burner should stay lit as long as the glow bar ignitor is glowing. Now, if the igniter is weak and does not pull enough current, it will not allow the oven gas valve to open or it can cause the oven gas valve to shut the gas off even after the burner has ignited.

I added an image below that should help you diagnose the failure.

The oven ignitor is likely weak and needs to be replaced. The ignitor can be ordered from Sears PartsDirect or ff you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: Sears Home Services

A:

James: With out a complete model number I wouldn't be able to confirm if it has a broil igniter and a bake igniter. Open the oven door and look up at the top of the oven cavity and if you do not see a broil burner and igniter; then it doesn't have one. If it does not have a broiler mounted to the ceiling of the oven then you would have a broiler drawer located below the bake burner.

Q:

Why won't my Kenmore oven ignite, the igniter is glowing orange in color?

A:

Based on your details the igniter is too weak to cause the gas valve to open. It should turn bright red to almost white hot. If the igniter does not pull enough current the gas valve will not open. Replace the igniter and your range will operate normally again. The part number of the igniter is 5303935066.
