Q:

What does the "F30" error code indicate on my Kenmore stove model 790.71218700?

A:

The F30 code indicates that the electronic oven control board detects an "open" (or extremely high resistance) oven temperature sensor probe circuit. This can be caused by a failed temperature sensor probe, a wiring failure or a failed control board. The best way do diagnose and repair this failure is to unplug the range, shut off the gas supply and pull off the upper back panel to access the control board. Use a volt/ohm meter to measure the resistance through the temperature probe circuit that is connected to the control board through the violet wires. You should measure around 1100 ohms through this circuit at room temperature. If the resistance is extremely high or the circuit is "open" (measures Ol -- open load or infinite resistance) then you will need to check the resistance directly at the temperature probe. You can normally access the wiring connection for the oven temperature sensor probe by removing the screws that secure this component to the upper back wall of the oven cavity. Carefully pull the sensor into the oven cavity until you reach the wire harness disconnect plug. Unplug the sensor and measure the resistance of the sensor. If the sensor measures about 1100 ohms of resistance then you have a wiring failure between the sensor and the control board that will need to be resolved. If the sensor reads extremely high resistance (or is open) then it will need to be replaced. You can order a new sensor from the Sears PartsDirect website. The part number for the sensor is 316233900.

NOTE: On some ranges, you will not be able to access the temperature probe from inside the oven cavity. In this situation you would need to remove the lower back panel to access the wire harness disconnect on the back of the oven temperature sensor probe.

Be sure that you unplug the range and shut off the gas supply before accessing internal components. Internal metal edges on the range can be sharp. Protective gloves are recommended.

If the resistance of the circuit measured from the electronic oven control board is normal (around 1100 ohms at room temperature) then the control board will need to be replaced. The part number for the control board is 316455410.
