A:

Having an error code on a range can be an inconvenience and keep the range from working properly. While you are waiting for an expert answer, I suggest you add to the thread of this question and include the full model number of your range so that the expert can provide you with a more detailed answer. I did manage to find a link that will provide you with some tips about what the error code may be indicating on your range. I hope my link is useful.

The self cleaning mode for my Kenmore glass top range Model #79096532501 is not working. I follow the steps beginning with step 4, push select clean arrow up or down to select the cycle (2, 3, or 4 hours) Cln appears but the select clean light continues to flash until the Error Code F 40 appears with a continuous beep. I push stop/clear to clear the code and cancel the self clean process. Thanks Josep for the the link.

Joseph P. provided a link for a previous answer that indicates the cause of the F40 code on this type of range. The cook top is locked out during the clean cycle by the lockout control board. A failure in that cook top lockout function is causing your F40 code. You could have a bad lockout control board, a wiring failure or a failed electronic oven control board in the console. I recommend that you unplug the range and remove the upper back panel behind the console. Check the wiring connections between the electronic oven control board and the cook top lockout control board. I provided a wiring diagram in the image below. If the wiring connections are okay, I recommend that you replace the cook top lockout control board (part 316418101). You can order that board from the Sears PartsDirect website. It costs about $60.

Replacing that control board will likely fix this problem.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will try to assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
