Q:

kenmore cooktop dosent work

A:

Diagnosing a cook top with all the electrical and electronic boards can be a complicated job. While you wait for the expert to review again, I see that Sears Parts Direct has the wiring diagram. I attached below if needed. If you do decide to schedule an experienced technician to help, I also added the link to Sears Home Services below.

I did not find any tests for the control boards in this cook top. The wiring diagram is shown in the image below. You indicated that you checked power going to the cook top. I assume that you measured 240 volts between the black L1 wire and the red L2 wire in that junction box to check that power. NOTE: If you did not already check that live voltage and you intend to perform that procedure, be sure that you wear proper safety equipment (electrical safety gloves and safety goggles). You should only conduct that live voltage check if you are completely confident in your technical ability to safely execute that measurement. Shut off the house circuit breakers for the cook top to disconnect electrical power as soon as live testing is completed . If you need to have a service technician check that live voltage, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .

NOTE: You should also measure 120 volts between the L2 wire and Neutral wire to verify that the power control board is getting voltage and has a proper neutral connection. See above warnings about live voltage checks .

If the voltage is okay as you indicated, then you can shut off the house circuit breakers for the cook top to disconnect electrical power. Check the wiring connections more thoroughly if necessary by using the wiring diagram shown below. If all of those wiring connections are okay, you can check the continuity through the wire between the P4-3 connection on the user interface control board and the J2-3 connection on the power relay control board. If one of those thermal switches is bad, then that could be causing your failure. If that wire shows continuity, then you likely have a bad control board but there is no way to determine exactly which control board is bad. If the user interface does not power up, then you can try to fix the cook top by replacing that power relay control board first (part 316442112). You can order parts from the Sears PartsDirect website. If that does not fix your problem, then you may also need to replace that user interface control board (part 316442051). Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breakers for the cook top to disconnect electrical power before accessing and replacing internal components.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The first thing that should be checked and verified is the voltage supply. Based on your symptom it sounds like a lack of the proper voltage supply. The cook top must have 220 volts and a good neutral supply in order to power up. NOTE: I do not recommend checking any voltages unless you have experience and feel safe and confident in doing so; other wise I strongly suggest calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your cook top. It could also have a burnt wire connection inside the cook top or a faulty control board.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
