Q:

kenmore cook top model 790 wont turn off

A:

A non working Range is not something any of us want to see. If you are technically handy, this is a good site to get instruction and fix some things yourself. If you do not feel confident doing your own repairs, an option is to visit Sears Home Services and use the scheduler. While you wait for the expert to review your model, you can check the bottom link for some possibilities. Hope this is of help.

Thank you for your question.

I can understand your concern with the hot light staying on when the burner is off.

Without the model number I can only give you some general information on cook tops.

It sounds like the hot light circuit in that element has stuck in the on position.

This is not an unsafe condition with the range and you can use the range until you can have the element replaced.

If you will reply with the model number I can look at the wiring diagram and give you an exact part in the burner switch circuit that has failed.

Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Thank you for getting back with us. The model number has a prefix of 790. It will have a series of numbers after this like, 790.42731 as an example. The model number should be located under the cook top on the metal panel. You will need to look from the underside in the cabinet below. Hopefully they did not put it on the side edge because it would be difficult to be able to read it. The owner's may have a series of models listed on the cover. But I know of some that only put the prefix on them and not the rest of the model number. I hope this will help. Sam A.

Thank you for the model number. There is no danger of the burner coming on by itself. All the heat sensor light does is tell you when the glass is hot. The contacts for the circuit have stuck on for that burner only. You will have to remove the cook-top from the counter and replace the element that has the hot light on. If you will tell me which burner it is I will get you the part number for the replacement element. If you feel comfortable with removing the cook-top from the counter top and disassembling it for the repair I can help you if you want to do that. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Thank you for the update on your range. If you do not feel comfortable with being able to lift the top of the range and working with electrical wiring I would suggest having a technician replace the element. I would the flat labor cost would be about $135.00 and the price of the part for the Left Rear burner which I think is what you mean is $50.00. The repair should be less than $200.00. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician.
