Q:

Cost estimate to repair .vs. replace R-930AK Sharp Microwave

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
I am sorry to hear about the issue you are having with the turntable motor inside the microwave, I know how frustrating issues like that are to have occur.
I don't work directly with Sears Home Services for scheduling technicians, so it would be best to call 1-800-349-5071 for exact pricing, however, the charge for a technician is usually around $79 for the diagnostic visit to verify the issue. The $79 will apply to the part and installation of the part by the technician if you elect to have us perform the repair. The cost of the part for this model of microwave is $74.99. The motors don't take a large amount of time to install, so I would guesstimate about $60 for labor. All in all, you would be around $150-$200 for the part and installation, roughly speaking.
With the microwave being about 14 year of age at this point, it might be worth considering a replacement, as a new microwave would be maintenance free for years to come, whereas, you may replace this motor and have another maintenance issue come up a little ways down the road.
Hopefully this is helpful and let us know if we can be of any further assistance. Thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

Hi,

Thank you for your question. It is concerning when your appliance is not functioning correctly.

There is a reed switch that sees a magnet built in the spray arm, as the arm turns the reed switch closed a circuit and the motor keeps on running in wash. If the sensor or the magnet fails the blocked spray arm error is emitted. You could check the spray arm ends to see if the magnet is still operating. It is a magnet and will react to metal, so the magnet can be checked by holding something metal around the ends of the spray arm. If the metal sticks to the spray arm, you have a sensor problem. See Pictures

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance please include more details in a reply to this entry below.
Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Thank you very much, Mr. Bill. Will test the magnetism this weekend. Approximately how much will it be to fix the sensor?

A:

The price for the sensor is part number WD21X580 at a cost of 37.99 + tax and shipping if any where you are at. The spray ary is WD22X135 at a cost of 74.99 + ship and handling. If a sears tech came to repair the diswasher sensor, the dw would have to be pulled out and the sensor replaced and tested. This would run 200.00 to 250.00. high side.

Thank you very much, Mr. Bill! The magnet is working so I guess it is a sensor problem. Since the d/w is 20-25 years old, I think I'll look for a replacement. I very much appreciate your timely replies!

After enduring the same error message every minute during the wash cycle (GD2800D03) and trying MANY different "cures" (even to replacing the pump assy and adding teflon gaskets), I made a tight fitting plexiglass shield and defeated the interlocks so I could watch the operation. The lower arm jets were no longer spraying in the proper direction (or even the same direction) to drive the arm, probably due to the MANY years of extremely caustic dishwasher solution eroding the plastic. Although I could use JB weld and rebuild the jet orfices, I have a new arm WD22X135 on order. Wish I had done the plexiglass shield years ago. . .
