A:

Hello again, I see you have all the needed model information. I think it is great you have tackled this and I understand how assembly does not always go according to the instructions. A suggestion I have at this point is to wait on the answer from the expert. I am certain they can walk you through these issues. Good luck!

The tip of the orifice on the side burner gas valve sticks into the opening of the venturi tube of the burner. It is not a tight fit and the burner tube will move from side to side on the orifice. As long as the burner can become disconnected from the valve orifice, it is ok.

The part that rotates on the side burner is an air shutter adjustment. For using propane the opening with the screen on it should be fully exposed.

The heat shield for the propane tank mounts above the propane tank to deflect the heat from the grill. One edge of the shield might have gotten bent in packaging or shipping. Straighten the edge of the shield and install the brackets per the instructions. It is not important which way the shield is turned. It needs to be in place to deflect the heat.

You should cook on the flat side of the grates. When you position the grates, you should have a flat surface to grill on.

I have purchased this same grill and have the same issues with the gas tank heat shield. Like the original poster, the metal shield has a bend in it that is definitely by design. It isn't clear to me the orientation of the mounting arms or even where they are connected on the front side of the grill. More detail instructions would be very appreciated.

I went to Sears and looked at the demo model. The longer legs connect to the back of the shield (bent part) and attach to the back of the bottom back panel with 5/38 screws. The shorter legs set on the silver front panel at the two holes above the doors. They are attached using flat head 5/38 screws. If the drip pan seems to be in the way, try reversing it.

Q:

Why is my new Kenmore gas grill not heating properly?

A:

Something like this sounds like the regulator or propane tank valve is causing problems. Since the unit is new & your sure it’s connected properly I recommend calling for warranty service.
