Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore elite refrigerator light not shutting off

A:

That known issue applied to Kenmore refrigerators with model 795.77549600 up to serial number 704KRxxxxx. Based on your serial number (706KR00061), that refrigerator should have the updated control board, wire harness and socket. I cannot guarantee that your failure would be covered under that lifetime warranty that covered the model 795.77549600 up to serial number 704KRxxxxx. Since your refrigerator is outside of the serial number range, you may need to pay for the labor service charge and parts to fix that problem. You can still schedule service but it will be up to the technician whether the parts and labor costs will be charged or not. If you need more help with this problem, reply with additional details and we will try to assist you further.

Yes. Since the bulbs are removed, the refrigerator will be safe. It should operate normally even though you will not have light on the inside. Sorry for the delay in the service. If you need more help, let us know.

Hello Brian. According to your model and serial number, that refrigerator should have a thermostat in that refrigerator light circuit. I provided a wiring diagram in the image below with that light circuit traced in pink and blue. That thermostat is shown in the second image. I recommend that you UNPLUG the refrigerator and check that thermostat for continuity as shown in the brief repair video that I provided below this response. If that thermostat is "electrically" open (has no continuity) then it will need to be replaced. You can order that part from this link: Lamp Harness with Safety Thermostat for Kenmore Refrigerator 795.7713700 . Be sure that you UNPLUG the refrigerator before accessing and replacing internal components. If that safety thermostat is okay, you could have a wiring failure or a bad control board causing this problem. Reply with additional details if you need more assistance.

The image below shows how to remove the light bulbs in the refrigerator. Unplug the refrigerator and let the light bulbs cool down for a few minutes. Use a pair of gloves or a cloth to prevent burns on your fingers if you remove the bulbs while they are still warm (or hot). NOTE: There is a known issue with the lights staying on in that model of refrigerator. Within certain serial number ranges, the repair (including any damage to the socket and liner) is covered by an extension of the manufacturer's warranty (for the life of the refrigerator). I recommend that you reply with the serial number of your refrigerator and we will check to see if your refrigerator should be covered by that extended warranty for that problem.
