Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore stove won't start every time

A:

It can be extremely annoying when your range will not start properly every time. I did some research and provided a link to a similar question and answer on our site. I hope this will shed a little more light on the issue until the Expert responds to your question in more detail within 24 to 48 hours.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

If the control accepts the command when the "Start" button is pushed and you hear the bake relay click behind the clock and then hear the spark igniter attempting to ignite the bake burner and it fails; the bake burner assembly should be replaced.

The electronic range control must be programmed to close the bake or broil relay (BAKE or BROIL operation selected). 120 volts are supplied to the DSIB across pins 6 to 4 (BAKE) and 7 to 4 (BROIL). The DSIB provides 8-18 VDC to the gas distribution valve to open and release gas into the oven. The DSIB also sends a spark to the oven ignitor through the spark output, and creates and maintains an oven flame. NOTE: When the unit is plugged in, there will be a 40-second delay before the oven system is operational. (The timer will count down, but the ignition system will not operate.)

The bake burner and bake igniter have been modified to assure consistent oven ignition and performance. The burner has been modified by increasing the number of ignition ports located at the electrode tip. The electrode shield has been modified by reducing the amount of material around the electrode ignition point.

Order and install the new bake burner with igniter and it will likely resolve the intermittent bake burner ignition. The burner and igniter will come as a complete assembly. To access the bake burner; remove 2 screws at the rear of the oven bottom. Lift the rear of the oven bottom up and back until the front of the panel is away from the front frame. Remove from oven.

The Bake burner assembly with igniter #8190618 can be ordered from Sears Parts Direct.

If the oven control will not accept the "Start" command, then I would suspect a faulty membrane switch #8523887 .

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
