Why does my Kenmore dishwasher, model 665.17462300 leave fine grit on the dishes and glassware?

A:

Why does my Kenmore dishwasher, model 665.17462300 leave fine grit on the dishes and glassware?

You will receive the gritty residue on your dishes if the removable filter is dirty or improperly installed. If the filters are dirty, it will cause a drop in cleaning performance of the dishwasher.

The filters need to be cleaned when:

  • Visible objects or soils are on the Upper Filter Assembly

  • There are food particles or soils still present on the dishes

  • Dishes feel gritty to the touch

Cleaning the filter can be based on visual signs that it needs to be cleaned or based on the recommended intervals of the Cleaning Chart. The chart can be found in the Owner's manual.

Filter Removal Instructions:

  • Turn the Upper Filter Assembly 1/4 turn counterclockwise and lift out.

  • Grasp the Lower Filter in the circular opening, lift slightly, and pull forward to remove.

I have a Kenmore dishwasher model #665.16222503 purchased in 2006. Up until this past year, overall it worked well. Aside from a few things we changed ourselves 2 years ago (heating element, computer panel) it has just recently started leaving sandy/gritty residue on glasses, blows, etc in the top rack. Have been searching for solutions on the Internet and done all the clean outs recommended (the ultra-wash module at the bottom with all the filters, ultra flow water feed tube), have used the new jet dry dishwasher cleaner which is on the market, etc. when doing the clean outs we did find some of this residue and cleaned everything out really well. Switched from the Finish all-in-one powerball tabs to a gel liquid detergent and still cannot stop this gritty stuff from showing up. I am assuming this is food particles which are staying somewhere within the dishwasher and for some reason are not being drained out. What could be causing this? We do have hard water, but our home uses a water softener. Occasionally, the softener runs out of salt and the water is used for a while before we realize that the softener needs to be re-filled. But, even severals weeks after the softener is filled, the dishwasher is still doing the same thing. HELP!!!

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life. I know how frustrating it can be when appliances do not function properly.

Without your model number I am only able to give you general information. You can reply with a model number for additional help.

Without knowing what you have read or tried this is a difficult question to answer. The F28 error is one of the most if not "the" most difficult error codes to diagnose. I highly recommend having a trained service technician evaluate this problem. You can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . The F-28 error code indicates a serial communication error between the main control board and the motor control board of the washer. This can be caused by the following problems:

1.Grounding micro switches in the washer cabinet not engaged. If you are trying to run the washer with the front bottom service panel removed, you will get this error code. Bad switches or wiring could also cause this problem. 2.A loose or bad wire connection between the main control board and the motor control board. 3.A bad wiring harness. 4.A bad drive motor. 5.A defective motor control board. 6.A bad main control board. Unplug the washer and check the wire harness connections between the main control board and the motor control board. I am including images below that will help you gain access to the components in your washer.Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts. Also check the wire harness connections between the motor control board and the drive motor. The grounding switches must be engaged. There is one on the front of the washer and one on the back. Both of these switches must be properly connected and engaged. If not, you could get the F28 error code. NOTE: Make sure that the bottom front service panel is properly in place to engage the front grounding switch.

Check the Power Cord connection on the Line Filter (where the power cord connects) and Make sure they are not reversed, L1 (black wire) to the L terminal and Neutral (white wire) to the N terminal.

Check the MI3 Serial Communication Connector from the Machine Control Board (MCU). Make sure the connector is not upside down, the wires should be to the left when facing the MCU connectors. Check the RAST connectors for pins pushed up or poor connections. You need to remove the connector and visually inspect it.

The remaining checks will require the use of an ohm/volt meter and you will have to perform ohm checks and/or live voltage checks. If you have a meter and are confident in your ability to safely perform these checks, reply to this post and I will be happy to assist you in any way I can.

Follow the procedures in this answer, and if I may be of further assistance please include your model number in a reply to this post.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Thanks again for using Manage My Life.

Jose, If your 665.17462300 dishwasher has no LED lights then the thremal fuse is likenly the cause of the problem. If there are lights but the dishwasher will not run then the door switch may be the problem. If there are lights but the dishwasher will not fill, run or drain then check the door switch with a meter is one is available.

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I can certainly understand how you would need to know the manufacture date of your dishwasher. I did do research and I do show that your dishwasher was made in 2003. It is about 10 years old. If it runs great and parts are still available it may be better to just keep the unit. Highly up to you depending on what you would like to upgrade to. When you do decide to upgrade or have questions you can visit our Sears.com site and speak to a representative that will assist in finding a similar model. Thank you for choosing Sears.

Thank you for your question. Have a great day.
