Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The "E6" error code means the overfill switch/float switch has remained tripped/open for 2 seconds while running a cycle. A two minute automatic drain cycle will start after which the dishwasher will turn off. The "E6" will display while draining and until Cancel is pressed.

This can be caused by a faulty water inlet valve, incomplete pump out or by a wave action caused by loose screws at the top of the pump outlet or if the cap that holds the lower spray down has rip or hole. The pump outlet is what the lower spray arm is attached to.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

Q:

Should I repair an older dishwasher or replace it?

A:

You are welcome. This dishwasher is at least 14 years old. At this point I am thinking the electronic control may not be reading the float switch correctly or the wiring from the control to the switch is compromised. The control is $255.32; the wiring can possibly be fixed fairly cheaply. You can purchase a new version of this dishwasher for not much more than the cost of the control.

Q:

Why does my Kenmore dishwasher model number 665.1691591 flash E6, and stop working in the middle of the cycle?

A:

The E6 error code indicates that the float switch was tripped for 12 seconds during the wash. Most likely you are facing a drain system issue, but the switch may be bad. You did not tell me whether the dishwasher drains completely or not, if it does the switch is likely bad. If it does not drain completely you will need to check the drain lines, and the sump assembly for clogs. I have included a set of illustrated instructions (See images below). These should step you through the process of removing and checking your sump assembly.
