Question and Answers

Q:

Why won’t my Kenmore dishwasher light up?

A:

If you have a volt/ohm meter and are comfortable working around live electricity I can give you a few checks that will help you diagnose the problem. Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts.

First I would suggest you check the VAC (Voltage Alternating Current) into the dishwasher. Remove the toe panel and locate the terminal block (where the household wiring is connected to the dishwasher). While grasping the insulated portion of the meter probes (never touch the metal conductor during testing) place one probe on each of the wires (the white and black wires).

  • It should be 120VAC.
  • If not, check the breaker box. Otherwise, I recommend having an Electrician check your house wiring.
Next you will need to gain access to the console and control board. I have included a set of illustrated instructions for disassembly (see images below). Use the instructions on this sheet to check the keypad operation (see “checking keypad operation” below).
  • If all of the buttons on the keypad test OK, replace the control board.
  • If any of the buttons fail this test, replace the console assembly.
NOTE: The meter must be connected to the pins on the ribbon cable with proper polarity. Notice that one column of the chart states + pos. lead (red) and the other column states – neg. lead (black).

As a test remove the front panel, lay it face down on a table, then examine the Ribbon Cable for damage like mine (I peeled mine apart to gather the attached images) The unprotected traces of the flex ribbon cable rub against the corner of the front panel housing. Add some moisture after the trace is exposed and instant it is only a matter of time until it fails. Seems to me as a design fault.

I can understand how important it is to have your dishwasher working properly. The issue that you are having is with the sensors and the soap suds. When your dishwasher has a lot of suds in it, it will interfere with the sensors. They are seeing that there is debris in the tub so it will keep washing. It will not advance until they see that everything is clear. The best way to remove soap suds from your dishwasher quickly, is to use a cap full of oil. Just pour this into the bottom of the machine, and the soap will disperse. I hope this helps. If you need further assistance, please reply to this thread. Thank you for using Manage My Life.
