The wrong knob might have bees sent. For this model the knob should be part number 4154444. The following link will show a picture of the knob: Control Knob . Check if this looks like the switch you received.

A:

The first image is the 415444 knob and the picture should look something like what you have. The part that fits into the switch is not easily seen but it should be keyed to the switch. Try rotating it and see if it will fit in the switch.

The second image is the 675382 switch kit which comes with two knobs.

There have not been a lot of changes with compactor over the years and the knob not fitting is not a known issue.

Returning the knob and having another one shipped is usually the next step.
