Q:

Why does my Kenmore UltraWash dishwasher model 665.17362301 leave soap scum and food on my dishes?

A:

Several different problems could cause the soap scum and the food to stay on your dishes. Here are some issues to check:

  • If you are using powdered dishwasher detergent, make sure that it is fresh. If it is old and clumpy, it may not be dissolving properly. It is recommended to store powdered dishwasher detergent in a cool, dry area. Storing it under the sink can cause it to deteriorate faster.
  • Check the water temperature in your dishwasher. The owner's manual describes this process on page 12. Here is link for your owner's manual if you need it: Owner's Manual . Low water temperature can prevent the detergent from dissolving properly and cleaning the dishes.
  • Make sure that you are using rinse aid and that the dispenser is set properly.
  • Check the water fill level in your dishwasher. Start a cycle and crack the door open to stop the cycle as soon as the filling stops. Open the door fully to observe the water level in the bottom of the tub. It should be within 1/4" to just touching the bottom of the heating element. If it is low, this could be causing your problems. Use the information in your installation guide to shut off the breaker and pull the dishwasher out and check the water supply for proper pressure and flow. Here is a link for your installation guide if you need it: Installation Instructions .
  • Make sure that you are using the proper type of dishwasher detergent in the correct amount. The guidelines for detergent use are in your owner's manual. If you have a water softener, you may need very little detergent.
  • Check the spray arms for cracks or splits. Check the spray holes for deposits or debris.
  • A problem in the chopper blade area of the sump or with the drain check valve could cause this problem. The image below shows the procedure for accessing this area. Your dishwasher may be slightly different than the one shown below. You will likely need to remove screws that secure the inner feed tube to the inside of your tub instead of clips. The rest of the procedure should be the same. If you are able to access this area, you may find a clog or restriction that is inhibiting spray pressure through the spray arms.
These tips should help you determine the cause of your dishwasher problem. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details.
