Question and Answers

Q:

What can I do when the drawer on my Sears trash compactor is jammed and can't be opened?

A:

The lack of access will make this a difficult problem to deal with.

If the ram is in the down position and the drawer can't be open then the first thing that must be done is to raise the ram.

To do this the compactor must be pulled out and laid down so the bottom can be accessed. See the image below.

With the bottom panel removed you can use a socket or wrench to turn the drive pulley manually and raise the ram.

the motor does have an overload but it will reset itself after a few minutes. You will have to get access to the bottom of the compactor to raise the ram.

I hope this information helps but submit another question with any additional details for further assistance.

Thanks Celene for directing me to Fred's advice for solving my compactor problem. My husband says he will do this tomorrow and hopefully, that is all we need to do to get it running again. I was certain we did not need a service call from Sears. Very annoying not to have a place to put your trash........ Thanks again for your prompt response!

I have the same problem and did your procedure, but using the scocket wrench, it still will not move. Just a few turns and it stops dead in both directions. It is a real jam and don't know what to do from hear. I look down into the unit and everything looks fine, I just don't know why it is being held down. Could the rams be stripped?

My trash compactor appears to not completely compact the waste. The chain and gears appear to be OK. It is possible the inter lock switch could be the problem?
