Q:

Kenmore Elite dishwasher will not circulate water

A:

Thank you for your question.  I am sorry you are having a problem with your Kenmore 665.13163K702 Dishwasher.   From the description of the problem the dishwasher will drain but it will not circulate the water.  If the drain pump will work and the dishwasher will fill then the door switches are okay.  Checking the filters is a good first step.  The first two images below may be helpful to you in removing and cleaning the filters.  Can you tell if the circulation motor is running?  Can you hear a hum or is the motor completely silent?  If the motor is not running then the problem might be the control, motor or even a motor fuse.  The 3rd image shows the fuse circuit.  This could be checked with a meter if one is available.  I hope this helps.  I agree 4 years is to soon for problems.  You can reply below with any additional details for further assistance.

Fed, Thank you for your reply. I had already cleaned out the filter and screen. I just used the first diagram and took out the feed tube assembly and did not find anything blocking it. I do not hear any humming from the motor - it is completely silent. I do not have meter - is the fuse something that I can just replace easily to test that? I really do not want to pay for the one year max $500 warrantee that I am being offered by Sears - especially since this unit is only four years old and was very, very expensive! Regards, Rob

There is a fuse that might cause the motor not to run. The circuit is shown in the above images but a meter would be needed to check this fuse.

Thanks Fred. I am having Sears come out tomorrow to check it out. I think that the circulating pump assembly will be replaced. It is $193 and they offered me an extended warrantee for $249. I would normally replace it myself. But for about $50 more I will get a one year warrantee. I will be addressing this issue with the customer care department at Sears after this has been fixed. A pump/motor should not go out in four years on a $1600 dishwasher. I have thirteen major Kenmore appliances in my home and will have to decide to go elsewhere in the future if they can't get their manufacturers to make quality products - especially when they are Kenmore Elite items. Thanks again for the help. Regards, Rob

I hope the repair goes as planned. I agree with you and failures are tracked and excessive failure rates lead to changes and improvements. The last few years have seen a huge change in appliance technology as we try to wash clothes and dishes with as little water and energy as possible. The intent was to get dishes as clean with a few gallons of water instead of 20 gallons of water. As the engineering gets older the machines will get more reliable. I see no excessive failure rates on the circulation motor. It fails rarely though I don't expect that to make you feel better about your dishwasher failure. I would suggest the motor fuse be checked first before replacing the motor. I hope things go okay. Let me know how the repair goes.
