Question and Answers

Q:

Can my water softener be saved?

A:

Making do with older home appliances can be worthwhile or a time and energy black hole that requires lots of money and attention. I can certainly understand wanting to bring it back online. While you wait for the expert to review and respond, you can take a look at a how to site with videos that may help. I attached below along with the link to water softeners at Sears.com if you would like to check prices on a new one. Hope this information helps.

It will be a tough job to get the salt out of the tank but it can be done. The biggest thing will be not damaging the tank getting the salt out. I usually will take broom handle with the broom part removed and smack it with a rubber mallet to break the salt up. If you can get the salt out I see no reason why the machine cannot be saved.

If you need to order any parts for this you can go HERE for that as needed.

Thanks Wade for your response. I'll give it a shot. If I get the salt out, I guess I would then get the rebuild kit. I was just worried about the resin cartridge being bad from sitting in solid salt . Worth a try, in any case. Thanks! --Peter

The resin tank is essentially isolated from the salt. If you look down in the salt tank you will see a cylinder, that's where the resin bed is. Even if some salty water were in there, I just don't think it would affect it (even after extended time). Once you get the salt out, see if you can get the machine to cycle. Then allow water to pass through it, as if it were working normally, then see if anything (red/maroon particles) show up in your tap water. If so, the resin is done. If not, the resin should be fine.

Will do. I'm eyeing up a 6 foot piece of 2 inch PVC pipe for smashing up the salt block--actually sounds like fun. I'm hoping to see clear water after a cycle. You're the man!! --Peer

Thank you for choosing ManageMyLife.com. I understand how frustrating it can be when the water softener leaks. Water leaking from the drain hose normally comes from inside the body of the valve. To stop this leak, the rotor disc and seal may need replacing. I have included a link to our PartsDirect page where you can purchase the part you need to complete your repair. Just click the blue link below to be taken to the page.

Q:

Leaking water softener

A:

Thank you for submitting your question. I understand your concern in regards to your leaking water softener and I will be happy to assist you. The water has to be leaking around the rotor inside the valve body to leak out through the drain hose. I recommend replacing the rotor and disc assembly (7199232) and the rotor seal kit (7129716) to correct the issue. You can order parts from our Sears Parts Direct web site. I hope this helps. Please reply back to this thread if you require further assistance. Thank you for using Manage My Life.
