A:

I believe that the door sag is due to the two white plastic "caps" on the the door hinge pins being worn. The replacement hinge (part 134550800) costs $62 and from the picture on this website, it appears to include these plastic caps. It would be nice if Sears would just sell the plastic caps alone for a couple of bucks. I would appreciate it if one of the Sears EXPERTS could address the issue of just replacing the plastic caps at a reasonable cost.

I'm wondering what the oil looks like in the engine. The screeching noise is what drives me to that line of thinking.

Was the machine stored with any fuel in it? If so, the carburetor is going to need to be serviced and possibly replaced.

Pick up a can of carb/choke cleaner from any auto parts store. Take the air filter off the engine a spray a 2-4 second burst of the cleaner down the throat of the carburetor, and then try to start. If the machine starts and funs for a few seconds and then dies, there is a problem with the carburetor. If you spray the cleaner and can't get it to do anything, you may need to contact Sears Home Services to have a technician come take a look at the machine. That noise you described hearing bothers me as that is not something you should normally hear.

Let me know what it looks like with the oil and if gas was left in it during the off season.

Thank you for using Manage My Life!

Paul,

I will be happy to assist you. White smoke is caused by burning oil. I recommend checking the oil level first. If it is over full with oil you need to drain some of the oil out. Once you have the oil level adjusted start the engine and let it run. The smoking should stop within 5 minutes.

If the oil level is fine I wonder if you tipped the unit for service. If you had it could a small amount of oil to get into the crankcase breather. If this is the case I recommend starting the engine and the smoke should stop within 5 minutes.

If the smoking does not stop or lighten, up within 5 minutes. Turn the engine off and have it serviced by a technician. I suspect the engine has an internal problem.

Please let me know what happens.

Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark.

I had a similar sounding issue and after checking everything else I checked the valves and one was stuck. It was a quick fix and now runs fine.

Q:

Electric start is not engaging. Hear it. Not catching gear. Has done this since new. Has gotten worse. Is there an adjustment or is the starter broken. 31AM62EE799 Mtd Snow thrower

A:

Mine has also done the same since new. If I keep hitting the button it will eventually engage...not impressed. Not sure why but I think it just may need some adjusting, haven't taken the time to look at it though.
