Q:

I just replaced the color wheel that I purchased from Sears Parts Direct. However everything looks blue. What can I do to fix that?

A:

The television is a great source of entertainment. The problem with the television still looking blue after the part being replaced can be frustrating. I did some research on your model number but was not able to find what would be causing the problem. Your expert will be able to help answer your question. It may take 24-48 hours. I do hope that everything works out.

There are a couple of different options. We can start with the most common one first. On the DMD board there will be a jumper that can be removed. The DMD sits in the middle of the light engine and there should be a fan that covers the left side of it. The bearings in the color wheel have changed. If your DMD board does not have the jumper check the sticker on it, it might be under it. Let me know how this works for you.

The DMD board controls the color wheel. If you provide the serial number of the TV I could check for the part number.

Q:

What can cause my DLP TV to keep shutting off by itself?

A:

There is a difference between a TV turning off by itself and shutting down. A shutdown usually has an error code or you have to wait a while to turn it back on, maybe even cycle the AC. When it turns off you can usually turn it right back on.

If the TV is shutting down, and the noise starts before this happens, I would suspect the colorwheel. There are only three mechanical parts that spin, the iris, the fans, and the colorwheel. A fan could shut it down but you would expect it to fail constantly with the same sound all the time. The iris can fail and making a ticking noise but the TV wont shut down. The colorwheel spins faster than all these components and will shut the set down when it has a change in RPM. Its a bit labor intensive to change one out since the optical block needs to be pulled out and minor adjustments need to be made after swapping. The part is dependent on the service model of your set and version if applicable. Most Samsungs monitored fan rotation as well so if you think this might actually be the problem, check for dust that is dragging down the RPM of your set.

If the TV is turning off and can be turned back on, you might just be hearing the fan or colorwheel slowing down. I do not see this as being likely but you would be able to turn the set on right away. I mention this because the HLSXXXX series from Samsung is about 3 years old now and had a tendency to have the lamp door improperly installed. By engaging the switch in the up position instead of the down position, slight movement in the cabinet would cause the TV to turn off. It would be a quick check to make. Also consider the hours the lamp has. Some people go through them every year with the amount of times they turn on and off the set and viewing time.

Sometimes when watching my tv, the picture just goes out but the volume stays on. Then after a few seconds the tv will start turning itself on and off about 3 times before I get all 3 flashing lights. Thanks. Rick
