A power failure doesn't usually cause a refrigerator to fail.

From the description you give the refrigerator section is okay but the freezer will barely make any ice.

The freezer is where the cold air is produced. If there is a damper/air circulation problem it usually shows up in the refrigerator section.

Make sure the fans are both working. There is one in the freezer section and there is one by the compressor. If either fan is not working cooling would be affected.

If the fans are all working and the compressor is running then there may be a sealed system problem.

A defrost problem would mainly affect the refrigerator section and not the freezer unless there is an extreme amount of ice buildup.

If everything seems to work but the freezer is only barely freezing then I suspect there is a restriction in the system.

This would be expensive to repair and require a technician.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I hope this information is helpful to you. If there are any additional details I may be able to assist you further.

From the description you give I suspect the problem is with the sealed system.

If the freezer is not freezing then there is most likely a problem with the compressor or sealed system. You say the refrigeration section is cold but the freezer is not. This is odd because all of the cold air in the refrigerator section originates in the freezer.

Most likely this problem is caused by a leak, a restriction or bad compressor.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

thank you for your suggestion, but i don't think it is the compressor or sealed system that went bad because my refrigeration section would not be cold then. after i bypass the thermostat and left it running for 24 hrs, my cup of water is almost completely iced. i think the problem is that there is not enough cold air going into the freezer section in another word it's not getting cold quick enough to freeze things. i've heard people mentioning the damper control or the timer part that went bad. i don't want to buy too many parts to find out which one went wrong. please help. thank you very much.
