Question and Answers

Q:

ice build up on floor of freezer 596.78573801

A:

Thank you for your inquiry on your Kenmore Refrigerator, Model: 596.78573801. From reviewing the details on your model, Ice buildup is usually caused by a failed defrost component. Your defrost system consist of the defrost bi-metal and heater. The image below will instruct you on how to run the refrigerator through a defrost mode. In a few minutes, if you can hear a hissing noise in the freezer or see a red glow from the heater, it indicates the bi-metal is not working and will need to be replaced. If you do not hear any hissing then the defrost heater will need to be replaced.

Safety Warning: Before beginning the repair, disconnect the direct power supply to the refrigerator to prevent the risk of injury or any electrical shock.

If you don’t feel comfortable or confident in this repair, then you can have it repaired at home by a sears technician. I have the included a link to the website: Sears Home Services or call 1-800-469-4663.

Is the theory here that the fan is frozen somehow and the thaw will free it ? Emptying the refrig and freezer would be a big problem since we don`t have a second unit in which to store the contents. Are there any other steps we could take ? It was suggested that we remove the fan cover from the rear of the unit to make sure no dust or debris was impeding the circulation of the fan, and to try a hair blower to free a frozen fan. Thanks for your help and we look forward to your reply.

Q:

Refrigerator is freezing everything 59678573801 Kenmore Elite Bottom-mount refrigerator

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com and being a valued member. It is unfortunate to hear that you are having issues with your fridge and I do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. I'm looking at your model number 59678573801 and this can be caused if the damper inside the diffuser stays open. If this happens, the air flow will never be reduced as the refrigerator cools down. The damper could be stuck or the sensor could be keeping it open or the main board. If the freezer gets too cold, this can also happen and it would be caused from the sensor or board. The only way to determine if the board or sensor has failed is, with a meter. Some resistance checks will need to be made. A technician may be needed to make these checks. If you have further questions please resubmit your question for further information.
