Q:

My Kenmore elite shows off in the temperature display for the refrigerator and freezer.

A:

Thanks for contacting manage my life about your refrigerator model 596.77606800; sorry you are having a problem, I will be glad to assist you. If the model number you provided is correct (you said it is a top mount, but the model is for a bottom mount freezer) I can find no data that shows any reason for a display of OFF in the Freezer side and OFF on the Fresh Food side. There are many test modes but none of them will display OFF  OFF. I would suggest that you try disconnecting power for a few minutes, this should reset the controls. It is also unclear if the refrigerator is operating while this is displayed. If the power supply reset does not help I recommend calling for service. Here is a link to Sears Home Services. If you need additional help reply with added details and I will be happy to respond. Ron H.

I'm sorry I meant it is a bottom mount freezer. It is not cooling or freezing anything. It has completely warmed everything up in it. I tired unplugging it and letting it sit for 5 minutes and nothing changed.

Hi kim, thanks for the reply, if unplugging did not help I suspect the control has failed. Even if a test mode was accidentally started it would clean after the doors are closed or the unit sits for four minutes. I would recommend calling for service, and you may want to ask about the SSA warranty offered by Sears, this is the only warranty you can purchase if the product is not operating. Ron H.

Is the control something fairly simple to replace?

A:

Hello Kim, there are possibilities of two boards that could cause this issue, the HV or high voltage board in the back of the unit and the display board in the fresh food section which also has an overlay that often has to be replaced. This is not a simple fix. In order to determine if one or all of these are the problem this unit has to be tested, requiring high quality testing equipment. Because of this I cannot tell you exactly which board is the cause of your issue. This is not something to guess at because the boards are expensive, just the parts can run over 300.00 dollars. There is a remote chance that a wiring harness between the controls could be the issue however that is unlikely. I know this is not what you want to hear but the Warranty is your best option. Ron H.
